Holiday Haircare

Sea and sun can play havoc with our hair, so it’s vital we take care of our tresses in the heat. Here are top tips for keeping your locks luscious all summer long.

We’re all aware of the damage the sun can do to our skin – we wouldn’t dream of going in the sun without wearing a high-protection sunscreen – but many people neglect their hair on holiday and return home for a drastic cut to get rid of the damage.
Wearing a sun hat and staying in the shade during the hottest part of the day – between noon and 2 p.m. – makes good sun sense, but turn over to find out what other steps you can take to protect hair from the detrimental effects of sun, sea and chlorine…

Top Tips For Holiday Hair
• Ask your stylist to recommend professional hair care products for your holiday and, in the same way as you would use sunscreen on your body, apply a protective lotion to your hair and scalp before you go out in the sun and then reapply after swimming.
• Chlorinated water and seawater strip out all the natural moisture from hair and fades colour so, before you swim, apply serum to hair. After your swim, rinse hair with fresh water and reapply. You can keep the sleek look going by using hair protectors which also offers protection and hold.
• Hair is at its most fragile when wet so use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, working gently from root to tip. Rollers are easy to pack in your suitcase and are superb for creating a sleek finish or adding bounce. Lightweight straighteners are also a big asset – but be sure to use a heat protection spray before using straighteners.
• Protect hair and scalp with professional formula products containing SPF 18 for maximum performance. Hair spray is excellent for use on coloured hair as it reduces fading by up to 62 per cent.
• Hair that has natural curl or waves can look wonderful on the beach and with very little effort you can make it work for you. Use a leave-in balm conditioner – fantastic for taming rebellious hair. While you’re getting ready to go out in the evening, let your hair dry naturally, then use just a slick of wax rubbed lightly between your hands. Using a very gentle scrunching action, work through the hair to create a soft, tousled look.
• Aftersun care is vital – particularly if you’re a fan of water sports. Your stylist will be able to recommend products with intensive conditioning properties that help to repair the structure of the hair.
Hot Looks For Cool Hair
Bold high-shine colours are big this summer. Think platinum ice-cool blondes, dark chocolate browns and vibrant reds – but all one colour and with very little multi-toning.
Style-wise, glamour is the key and a simple and relatively quick way of getting the big hair look is, believe it or not, to use straightening irons! First, apply a styling spray product before drying your hair.

1. Split the hair into sections. Starting with the bottom half of the hair, take one-inch sections ready to curl, clamp the iron around the hair near the scalp, twist and hold for a couple of seconds.
2. Slowly pull down the section of hair to the end. Open the irons and let the hair fall out into an open curl.
3. Repeat until the whole head is done. Tease out the curls gently with your fingers. Lightly spray with hairspray to hold the look and you’re ready to go!

12 Things Your Hairstylist Won’t Tell You
• I’m a beautician, not a magician. I can give you a supermodel’s haircut, but I can’t give you her face.
• Come at least five minutes early. If you’re running late, please call ahead. Show me some basic respect. This is a business, not fun and games.
• Don’t ask me to “squeeze” you in when I’m already booked, I’d be taking time and effort away from other clients. You wouldn’t like being treated that way. Hairdresser school does not teach about counter-transference, projection, negative reinforcement, or personality disorders. If you’re looking for a therapist, all I have is a tail comb and an opinion.
• Some women think that if they keep their hair all one length the way it was in high school, everyone will think they’re still in high school.
Guess What? You’re not. As you get older, you need to soften the lines around your face. Layers are the magic remedy.
• Bodies and hair change as hormones change. If your hair is dry, listless, or brittle, or if it’s not holding your colour or style the way it used to, see a doctor. If your hair isn’t over processed, you could be pregnant (surprise!) or menopausal.
• A trim is not “just” a trim. It requires my expertise, skill, knowledge, and time. Would you say to your dentist, “It’s just a tooth,” or to your doctor, “It’s just a leg”?
• If you want to buy a bottle of colour and do your own hair to save money, you can live with the consequences. Some clients will say, “Cut my hair just like you did last time,” That always baffles the stylist. The average time between appointments is six to eight weeks. I have hundreds of clients. How am I supposed to remember exactly how I did your hair the last time? If you want a carbon copy of a cut and style you loved, take a picture and show me.
• Why do you think a Child’s haircut should cost less than yours? Kids don’t sit still. Kids kick. It’s an intense experience.
• Standing all day and using scissors and a blow-dryer takes its toll – I have arthritis in my fingers, calcium deposits in my wrist, and 10% less hearing than I used to. I am a physical wreck.
• We see women at their worst. Their hair is wet, they have foils on their hair, they have no make up on. There’s nothing for them to hide behind. So they tell us everything. The truth is, the stylist really don’t care what they do in their private lives.
