Benefits of Breast Feeding

Breast feeding has numerous benefits over the health of the babies such as lower possibilities to catch infections, lesser obesity, etc. Post the recent study done by the Oxford Researchers, we can now add one more health benefit in the list i. e. breast feeding helps in protecting from Breast Apo.

The Oxford researchers recently conducted a large study known as the Millennium Cohort Study in which they come to the conclusion that the feeding habits of 10,037 mothers and their babies, and found that the Children, who are breastfed for four months develops fewer behavior problems, which according mothers, could be because of the make-up of the breast milk. The results of the study have been published in journal Archives of Disease in Childhood. Children receive the most complete and optimal mix of nutrients & antibodies from breast milk. Have fewer incidences of vomiting and diarrhea in the US (20-35 million episodes of diarrhea occur in children under the age of 5

Moreover, this study concluded that breastfeeding could result in better mother-baby interaction, which the researchers studies by asking mothers to assess respective problems in their children by the age of five such as anxiousness and clinginess, restlessness, and lying or stealing. Among all 6% children, who were breastfed showed signs of behavior problems, which is definitely lesser than the 16% children, who were formula-fed.

"Our results provide even more evidence for the benefits of breastfeeding", said Maria Quigley of Oxford University. As according to her, breast milk contains large quantities of fatty acid, growth factors and hormones, which serves big in the development of the brain and nervous system of the babies.

    BEAUTY Cool As A Cucumber

Use cucumber and its innumerable benefits for beautiful skin, inside out.

Cucumbers have always been associated with cooling properties, but do you know why the green fruit-cum-veggie is famous for it? With 90 per cent water content, cucumber is primarily a water body and its internal temperature is about 20 degrees cooler then the air temperature. Little wonder then that its natural refrigerating and refreshing effects have found a way into face washes, creams, scrubs and under-eye gels.
The cucumber plant was a popular skincare ingredient even in ancient times. Its thinly cut slices have been used as natural eye pads to soothe tiredness and puffiness and its juice blended with other kitchen-cupboard ingredients for cost-effective face masks and toners.

    Eye Soother
Calm and condition the delicate skin around your eyes with cucumber as it helps in reducing dark circles. The most clichéd, but also the most effective stress-buster, this is especially comforting after late-night parties or a busy week at work spent in front of a computer screen. You will feel the tiredness in your eyes being washed away by the moist cucumber in a matter of minutes.

    Skin Food
Cucumber contains vitamin C and caffeic acid, both of which soothe skin irritations. Its hard skin is rich in fibre and a variety of minerals, including silica, potassium and magnesium, all of which are excellent for your complexion’s health. “It astringent quality is best suitable for oily and combination skin and it also protects the skin from sunburn.

    Home Recipe
Blend cucumber juice with lemon for toning and with tomato juice for cleansing oily skin. Cooling and toning are cucumber’s twin benefits. For dry skin, blend grated cucumber with a paste of ripe banana, but make sure to use only organic cucumber for all your beauty treatments.
Buy dark green cucumbers with a bumpy surface, as they are most fresh and cool.

Planning Your Perfect Night Of Sleep?

Let’s go through your ideal night of sleep and sleep preparation together, starting in the afternoon.

    Getting Ready For Nighttime
Preparing for sleep at night begins during the daytime. Engage in some sort of aerobic exercise such as brisk walking in the afternoon or early evening. Daily exercise is one of the best ways to improve the quality of your sleep because it helps you fall asleep faster and sleep longer. People who exercise spend a greater amount of time in stage three and four sleep, the most restorative and repairing stages of sleep.
But don’t go overboard and rev up your body with exercise within three hours of bedtime.
Eat a modest, healthy dinner four hours before bedtime. You may eat a light evening snack before bed - even better is a snack that is correctly balanced with proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. This snack will help stabilise blood sugar through the nighttime hours. Some people can handle caffeine; others can’t. If you fall in the latter category, then quit drinking or eating caffeinated products by noon.
As the sun goes down, your body will relax naturally. When the light fades, the hormone melatonin is released into your bloodstream, making you sleepy. The amount of melatonin your body produces is affected by the amount of light going into your eyes.
Follow your body’s signal. Turn down the lights. Light messes up our hormonal response at night.
Don’t watch an action-packed movie or even the late local news programme, which tends to play up violent news stories. Watch something calming, play your favourite soothing music, or perhaps watch a funny TV show or movies since laughter helps to relax you. Take a warm shower or bath, adding soothing salts or lavender oil. Get all your senses involved. Dim the lights, listen to music, and relax.

When To Head To The Bed
Sleep before midnight is better than sleep after midnight. If you can’t bear the idea of going to sleep that early, remember that your very health is at stake. Ninety to 95 percent of your 60 to 100trillion cells are replaced each year, and much of that occurs during sleep that comes early in the night. Not only that, but while you sleep your body rejuvenates itself. Sleep and water are the two best anti-ageing secrets. If you value your looks and your life span, getting to bed at 10 p.m. won’t be difficult. For many patients with chronic disease, the most important recommendation is to be in bed by 9 p.m. and to sleep at least eight hours. God designed us to fall asleep when it is dark and to wake up when the sun rises.

    Wellbeing Stressed? Try This:..............!

    Homeopathy
Homeopathy has been found to be as effective as prescribed drugs for stress symptoms, such as anxiety. A survey revealed that 87 per cent of patients with mental and emotional problems reported positive changes. A qualified homeopath will talk through your stress symptoms and then prescribe a treatment that’s individually tailored to your needs.

    Sound Therapy
After a few basic questions about your medical history, you lie down and relax as the therapist plays soothing sounds on ancient or modern instruments, often bells or Tibetan bowls. The bowls produce different notes, each resonating with a specific stress symptom, such as insomnia, anxiety, or even a digestive problem, such as IBS.

    A Healthy Breakfast
The B vitamins in wholegrain and unrefined foods (brown rice, bread, cereals) reduce stress and mood swings. A survey found that having wholegrain toast for breakfast reduced stress levels by as much as 59 per cent.

    Holiday Haircare

Sea and sun can play havoc with our hair, so it’s vital we take care of our tresses in the heat. Here are top tips for keeping your locks luscious all summer long.

We’re all aware of the damage the sun can do to our skin – we wouldn’t dream of going in the sun without wearing a high-protection sunscreen – but many people neglect their hair on holiday and return home for a drastic cut to get rid of the damage.
Wearing a sun hat and staying in the shade during the hottest part of the day – between noon and 2 p.m. – makes good sun sense, but turn over to find out what other steps you can take to protect hair from the detrimental effects of sun, sea and chlorine…

    Top Tips For Holiday Hair
    • Ask your stylist to recommend professional hair care products for your holiday and, in the same way as you would use sunscreen on your body, apply a protective lotion to your hair and scalp before you go out in the sun and then reapply after swimming.
    • Chlorinated water and seawater strip out all the natural moisture from hair and fades colour so, before you swim, apply serum to hair. After your swim, rinse hair with fresh water and reapply. You can keep the sleek look going by using hair protectors which also offers protection and hold.
    • Hair is at its most fragile when wet so use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, working gently from root to tip. Rollers are easy to pack in your suitcase and are superb for creating a sleek finish or adding bounce. Lightweight straighteners are also a big asset – but be sure to use a heat protection spray before using straighteners.
    • Protect hair and scalp with professional formula products containing SPF 18 for maximum performance. Hair spray is excellent for use on coloured hair as it reduces fading by up to 62 per cent.
    • Hair that has natural curl or waves can look wonderful on the beach and with very little effort you can make it work for you. Use a leave-in balm conditioner – fantastic for taming rebellious hair. While you’re getting ready to go out in the evening, let your hair dry naturally, then use just a slick of wax rubbed lightly between your hands. Using a very gentle scrunching action, work through the hair to create a soft, tousled look.
    • Aftersun care is vital – particularly if you’re a fan of water sports. Your stylist will be able to recommend products with intensive conditioning properties that help to repair the structure of the hair.
    Hot Looks For Cool Hair
Bold high-shine colours are big this summer. Think platinum ice-cool blondes, dark chocolate browns and vibrant reds – but all one colour and with very little multi-toning.
Style-wise, glamour is the key and a simple and relatively quick way of getting the big hair look is, believe it or not, to use straightening irons! First, apply a styling spray product before drying your hair.

    1. Split the hair into sections. Starting with the bottom half of the hair, take one-inch sections ready to curl, clamp the iron around the hair near the scalp, twist and hold for a couple of seconds.
    2. Slowly pull down the section of hair to the end. Open the irons and let the hair fall out into an open curl.
    3. Repeat until the whole head is done. Tease out the curls gently with your fingers. Lightly spray with hairspray to hold the look and you’re ready to go!

12 Things Your Hairstylist Won’t Tell You
    • I’m a beautician, not a magician. I can give you a supermodel’s haircut, but I can’t give you her face.
    • Come at least five minutes early. If you’re running late, please call ahead. Show me some basic respect. This is a business, not fun and games.
    • Don’t ask me to “squeeze” you in when I’m already booked, I’d be taking time and effort away from other clients. You wouldn’t like being treated that way. Hairdresser school does not teach about counter-transference, projection, negative reinforcement, or personality disorders. If you’re looking for a therapist, all I have is a tail comb and an opinion.
    • Some women think that if they keep their hair all one length the way it was in high school, everyone will think they’re still in high school.
Guess What? You’re not. As you get older, you need to soften the lines around your face. Layers are the magic remedy.
    • Bodies and hair change as hormones change. If your hair is dry, listless, or brittle, or if it’s not holding your colour or style the way it used to, see a doctor. If your hair isn’t over processed, you could be pregnant (surprise!) or menopausal.
    • A trim is not “just” a trim. It requires my expertise, skill, knowledge, and time. Would you say to your dentist, “It’s just a tooth,” or to your doctor, “It’s just a leg”?
    • If you want to buy a bottle of colour and do your own hair to save money, you can live with the consequences. Some clients will say, “Cut my hair just like you did last time,” That always baffles the stylist. The average time between appointments is six to eight weeks. I have hundreds of clients. How am I supposed to remember exactly how I did your hair the last time? If you want a carbon copy of a cut and style you loved, take a picture and show me.
    • Why do you think a Child’s haircut should cost less than yours? Kids don’t sit still. Kids kick. It’s an intense experience.
    • Standing all day and using scissors and a blow-dryer takes its toll – I have arthritis in my fingers, calcium deposits in my wrist, and 10% less hearing than I used to. I am a physical wreck.
    • We see women at their worst. Their hair is wet, they have foils on their hair, they have no make up on. There’s nothing for them to hide behind. So they tell us everything. The truth is, the stylist really don’t care what they do in their private lives.

Food & YOU Secret Of Youth

Want to save your skin and look younger for longer? Skip the sugar!

We all know that sugar is linked to tooth decay, but some skin specialists believe that too much can also age our skin. While the outer layers of our skin are mostly dead, the layer of flattened cells underneath, called the dermis, could not be more alive. It’s continually making new cells, processing nutrients and oxygen and fighting off the detrimental effects of free radicals produced by overexposure to sun and pollution.
Within the dermis lies collagen, a protein-based tissue. Collagen fibres run lengthways in our face and neck and give our skin its long-term stretchability, firmness and structure. When collagen is damaged, wrinkles begin to form and our faces begin to sag.
This is where sugar comes in. When levels of sugar in our blood are raised, it seems that the sugar latches on to collagen fibres, making them tough, hard and lacking in their natural elastic properties. This makes our skin less able to ping back into shape after we laugh, smile or frown, so the lines formed when doing so become permanent.
The important thing to grasp is that it’s not just the obvious suspects that send blood sugar levels up - like that spoonful of sugar in an espresso or a bowl of cornflakes. Levels of sugar in our blood also rise when we eat foods with a high glycaemic index (known as high GI foods). Although they’re not always obviously sugary, they’re digested very rapidly after eating, and so they raise sugar levels quickly. Swapping to low GI options is a crucial part of your anti-ageing plan, as well as saying no to a piece of cake or a mid-morning biscuit. But it can be as simple as swapping a piece of high GI stick (rapidly digested and raises your blood sugar quickly) with your soup at lunchtime to a slice of lower GI granary toast, which slowly increases blood sugar.
As well as being a smart wrinkle-beating trick, this way of eating also keeps you feeling full-so the chances are you’ll not only end up with better skin you could drop a few pounds in the process as well.

    September: What’s In?
    Carrots
These crunchy treats are an excellent source of antioxidants, which help protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that a high carotenoid intake can give a 20 per cent decrease in postmenopausal breast cancer and may halve the incidences of many other kinds, including cervical cancer.
Tip: Throw grated carrot into soup, sauces or casseroles for added flavour and texture.

    Pears
A single juicy pear contains around 20 per cent of your recommended daily allowances of vitamin C and copper. Both of these protect our cells against damage caused by oxygen, and boost immune function by stimulating white blood cells to fight infection
Tip: Pears mixed with cheese are delicious.

    Beetroot
Naturally sweet and delicious, beetroot is packed with infection-busting vitamin C and fibre for digestive health, as well as lots of helpful minerals-potassium for good kidney function, magnesium to strengthen the nervous system, and manganese, which boosts the libido by increasing energy levels.
Tip: Whizz roasted beetroot in a food processor with yogurt and lemon juice, then add salt and black pepper for a delicious dip.

    symptom of depression

There are actually a lot of symptoms of depression that depressed people may actually posses but they don’t have to suffer from each and every one of them before you actually help them get diagnosed and be treated for this illness. Also, since symptoms of depression actually vary, the time of their “attacks” varies as well.

Here are some common examples of symptoms of depression:

Prolonged period of sadness or not feeling “up to it,” people who are always feeling not in the mood, who’d rather mope around the house and feel sorry for one’s self is the best example for this symptom of depression.

Feels hopeless, perennial pessimist: speaking of feeling sorry for one’s self, another common symptom of depression is when a person actually feels like he/she has nothing to look forward to in his or her life. As for being the perennial pessimist, those who show this symptom of depression are usually very negative about things, again, the feeling of hopelessness comes in to mind.

Guilt-driven, loss of self-worth and helplessness: other symptoms of depression that can be easily seen on people who prefer to mope around all day long are these. Whenever a person feels so guilty over something, that actually makes one a very sad person who feels like he or she doesn’t deserve to be happy. Thus, the loss of self-worth, if that person feels like he or she isn’t worthy of being happy or enjoying one’s self then that’s clear tell-tale symptom of depression. Helplessness also contribute to being depressed, when assuming that things won’t simply go your way, it’s already a clear saying that you have absolutely no hope in your body at all.

Isn’t interested in finding or taking pleasure; just dropping the hobbies as well as the other things that one used to enjoy: this tell-tale symptom of depression just shows how depressed a person can be, if one is actually too sad to take pleasure even in the very things that one loves then that person is seriously lacking something, rather, that person might well have caught the depression bug.

Fatigue, always tired: people suffering from depression, since they’ve lost whatever interest in life that they may have had before are actually lacking of physical energy at all times, if one would prefer to just mope around, probably won’t even eat not get enough sleep, a depressed person may well be on their way to not just a mental illness but depression can actually be terrible for one’s physical health as well.

Having trouble concentrating, having bad memory and is indecisive: a person who is suffering from depression easily gives away this tell-tale symptom of depression. Wherein one’s lack of interest with regards to the outside world or for just about anything for that matter can lead to that person’s inability to lose track of things and actually not be able to remember things that happened or what other people said. Lack of interest actually makes depressed people very inattentive.

There are actually more symptoms of depression that can actually help you see if a person (or you) needs to be brought to the doctor to get some help when it comes to depression: lacking sleep, sleeping too much or waking up at wee hours of the morning are all symptoms of depression (if it happens on a daily basis), appetite loss as well as eating too much may show one’s lack of enthusiasm for life. Be weary of sudden weight loss or weight gain in those around you. Being suicidal, talking about death, about wanting to die is another clear indication that that person is depressed. Being restless and irritable and physical symptoms that are usually brought about by poor mental health such as headaches, digestive disorders and various body pains.

Makeup tips every brunette should know

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As is the case with brunette girls’ makeup. While I doubt Newton ever worked behind a MAC counter, with every makeup tip I could offer a brunette, there’s a contradictory—yet equally appealing—suggestion. The biggest, most encompassing tip I can give is mix things up. Mix up the colors, mix up the looks, and always always mix up the emphasis. Don’t wear dark eyeshadow and liner in combination with burgundy lips or you’ll risk looking overdone.

Tip #1: You can get away with color. There are some sultry looks lighter haired girls can’t pull off as well as you without toning them down a notch. The traditional, sexy smoky look is much better left to the raven-haired girls, especially when they have dark skin, too. Mixing blacks and grays with nearly excessive amounts of eyeliner and a hint of silver shimmer for a night out looks stunning with the right frame around it and can look even scary with a light hair color attempting to embrace it.

Tip #2: You can get away with bare-faced beauty. You don’t have to use the color recommended above. Flesh tones look just as gorgeous on brunette girls (and are more appropriate for daytime wear unless you work on the set of a soap opera) as the darker, nighttime counterparts. Brunettes with fair skin can choose a light brown with a hint of peach or pink to warm it up, golden shimmer optional, to brighten their faces up without looking like they’re wearing any makeup. A thin line of brown eyeliner on the top lid and a single coat of mascara makes your eyes pop without screaming, “Look at my makeup!” Add a bit of coral-pink blush and some clear lipgloss and you’re done.

Tip #3: Wear color on your lips to avoid looking washed out. A nice medium pink or coral will add color to your cheeks and brighten your eyes. You’ll look more awake, whether your skin’s alabaster or ebony. You can skip every other type of makeup in a crunch, but slick on a lip color.

Tip #4: Wear icy bronzes, golds, pinks, or any other light color to plump up the appearance of your lips and add contrast with your hair. Not to mention this one’ll bring out your eyes. This one gives you the opportunity to look like the portrait of wide-eyed innocence if you play your eyes up right. Put a little navy shadow on your lids, line just the tops, and go heavy on the mascara. There’s not a guy who could resist your gaze.

Tip #5: Bronzer is your friend. At least some point in every girl’s life, she wishes she had a tan if she doesn’t. A lot of brown haired girls feel they don’t quite look right if they don’t have dark skin to match (I’m not agreeing with that notion, just offering tips). Some of us are so fair skinned we couldn’t get a tan if we were left on a deserted island for 3 years or, on a more realistic scale, hopped in the tanning bed every day for six months. Bronzers and sunless tanners are healthier alternatives to tans for those who can achieve them from the sun and the only option for those who can’t tan. So if you need a tan to feel good about yourself, turn to sunless tanners and bronzers for an instant boost. And they do look very good with dark hair.

Tip #6: If you’re pale, love it. Renee Zelwegger and Reese Witherspoon recently went brunette with their pale skin. Did they hop in the tanning beds or go for heavy airbrush tanning? Nope! And you know what? They still look hot.

Tip #7: Red lipstick during the day is a faux pas. Even though this is a tip for everyone and not just brunettes, I decided to throw it in. Bright red lips during the day are usually a bit too shocking on everyone else’s eyes. Tone it down a little. Just because you have dark hair and red lips look outstanding with it, you don’t have to wear it all the time. If you love red too much to let it go, opt for a gloss version. It’s sheerer and juicy, not scandalous.

Tip #8: Sport the ruby lips if you wish! Don’t wear bold reds during the day but matte wine lipsticks can look fine for daytime wear if you keep your eye makeup muted and your hair’s on the darker end of the brunette spectrum.

Tip #9: Wear brown shadow: Brown shadow looks good with all hair colors and eye colors. It works especially well with brunettes because it ties their face and hair into one complete picture. Added bonus: it makes blue eyes really stand out (try bronze for blue eyes!).

Tip #10: Skip the brown and be different! Of all the hair colors out there, brown haired girls can get away with the most palettes. If your eyes are brown, you can wear any color of eyeshadow available. With more flamboyant colors, you stand out in a crowd. You may even get labeled as the fashion queen at your workplace. And that’s never an insult.

    BEAUTY Streamline Your Make-up Kit

Is your beauty bag bulging with products you never use? We reveal the latest essentials that will revolutionise your look!

What’s lurking in the bottom of your make-up bag? For many of us, the answer would be a few genuine essential items, which are far outnumbered by powders that don’t match our colouring and a multitude of unused lipsticks that looked great in the shop, but not on.
If you don’t look better, younger or fresher when you apply your make-up, it’s time to rethink what you keep in your kit. Beauty counters are literally packed with promising new products in gorgeous colours - why, then, do many of us find overhauling our choices so daunting?
Most of us tend to stick with products we find easy to use, or hold on to just in case we ever need them. However, just changing a few items is all that’s needed to totally revitalise your look.
Read on to find out which products to ditch and which to save, as well as the new core essentials every woman should have in her kit to help her look beautiful every day.
    Your Make-Up Amnesty
Tip out all your products and ask yourself the following questions for each one:
Is it past its prime? Here’s a general shelf-life rule: Foundation, concealer, lipgloss and lipstick have a life of up to 18 months, and it’s okay to keep powder, blusher and bronzer for up to two years. Eyeliner and eye shadow have just a year, while it’s time to buy mascara after six months.

Is it an expensive mistake? Foundations and lipsticks tend to be the most common beauty blunders, as we often buy the wrong shades. It is suggested to keep lipsticks to mix together for a new shade, but sometimes you have to be brutal. If a foundation is the wrong shade for your skin, there’s usually no way to salvage it - expensive or not.

Is it the wrong shade for the season?

As we move to autumn, put aside the light, shimmery shades that work with a summer glow: you need different shades and textures now. And, come spring, you’ll need to do the same thing again.

Is it embarrassing? Anything that’s broken, missing a lid or that’s nearly run out needs to go. Similarly, items that smell odd (a sign they’ve gone off) or are dirty and can’t be cleaned, also need to be thrown in the bin.

Have you been using it for years? If you’ve had certain staples in your kit for years, get a second opinion to see if they still suit you, or if it’s time to try something new. Ask an honest friend - you’re too used to how you look to determine if a product is working for you.

Do you have any ‘wow’ items? If you don’t have anything that gives you a special effect, like a gorgeous eyeliner or perhaps some eyelash curlers, you should probably invest in one.

FIVE SENSES THE WAY TO BE BEAUTY

    Sexy In A Snap!

The secrets for fast and easy ways to vamp up your allure!

    1. Get An All-Over Glow
Apply dry oil after you shower so that it will sink in before you dress. There’s nothing better than a pair of well-oiled legs with a slight shine.

    2. Loosen Up
Artfully undone looks more fun: Back-comb your hair at the crown and loosely pin it half up, half down for a Brigitte Bardot vibe. No need to add shine serum - you want rumpled, just-out-of-bed sultriness, not polish.

    3. Make A Statement
Entangle five necklaces of varying thickness and pin together with a brooch. It’s this season’s chunky necklace without the whopping price tag.

    4. Beat Those Bedroom Eyes
To give your liner a lived-in look, line the inner rims of your upper and lower lids with a creamy black pencil and blink three times to smudge.

    5. Try A Lighter Lip

Bold red is always a classic, but for a fresher look, use your finger tip to press on a coral or peach lipstick, then top it with a clear gloss. It’s a luscious effect that doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard.

    6. Have A Rosy Outlook
Mimic the flush you get from exercise with cream blush on the apples of your cheeks. Warm the blush between your fingertips, then press it in - makeup looks most natural when it melts into skin.

    7. Get A Little Dirty
Skip the shampoo once in a while and instead cleanse with conditioner alone.

    8. Dangling Modifier
Bring attention to your neck with long earrings. It’s a very attractive region of the body.

    9. Hit The Spot
Apply perfume at the neck and at your other pulse points. Or put it on damp skin after you shower so it’ll subtly come through your clothing.

    10. Keep Your Lips Swell

Sprinkle baking soda on a baby toothbrush and gently buff lips in small, circular motions to remove dry flakes. The vitamin draws blood into the lips, and they’ll swell and deepen in colour.

    The Sleep Diet

To some people, the need for sleep seems a sign of weakness. Getting by with less rest is the new macho – and women, especially, are buying into it. But while you’re asleep, every system in your body is being fine-tuned, reset, cleaned up and restored to its optimal operating mode by an army of molecular troubleshooters. New things you have learnt are being processed, memories are being organised and stored, and the immune system is building a new contingent of natural killer cells to fight off battalions of infectious agents. Growth hormone is being produced to repair damaged tissue (in adults) or build new tissue (in children) and to block the corrosive effects of stress.

When you sleep well, you’re in peak operating condition. When you don’t, you feel groggy and none of your systems is firing on all cylinders. You don’t think straight, make good decisions, remember where you parked the car or feel like making love. The resulting chemical glitches will put you on the fast track for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even obesity.

Here are some surefire strategies from top specialists for a truly good night’s sleep.

    The daily schedule
Wake up at the same time every day. A good night’s sleep actually starts in the morning. The second your eyes flutter open, light shoots down the optic nerve and into the brain’s biological clock. That stimulates production of hormones that regulate everything from how you think to how you feel.

"Sunlight activates the brain," says Frisca Yan-Go, medical director of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Sleep Disorders Centre. And activating it at the same time every morning teaches your body that at midnight it’s supposed to be asleep, and at noon it’s supposed to be awake.

Wake up at a different time every day and the clock is out of sync. You feel groggy and hungover for hours.

Give yourself an hour – the one right before bedtime. You need it to wind down and make the transition from the person-who-can-do-everything to the person-who-can-sleep. Unfortunately, most women are not giving themselves one single second. According to a 2007 poll by the US National Sleep Foundation, in the hour before bed about 60% of them do household chores, 37% take care of children, 36% do activities with other family members, 36% are on the internet, and 21% catch up on work.

Put yourself first. Women aren’t used to putting their needs ahead of others’, but sleep is so vital to health and happiness that we must make it a priority. If the dog’s snoring wakes you up, put him in another room. If your partner’s snoring wakes you up, help him get treatment. If he refuses to cooperate, put him in another room.

    ‘Hair’ Say

Stars reveal their hair care secrets….

    Kangna Ranaut
My curly hair is my personality and I love it!
Dos: I get a hot oil treatment regularly because while shooting the hair goes through a lot of wear and tear so repairing it is essential. If you have curly hair never use a comb, use your fingers.
Don’ts: Too much styling and use of products.

    Minissha Lamba
My hair is very fine and has a mind of its own... It simply does not conform!
Dos: I generally try to stick to one product instead of trying out loads.
Don’ts: Try colouring your hair as little as possible, avoid blow-drying your hair all the time.

    Amrita Arora
I like a good protein and oil treatment and wash my hair thrice a week. I like the oil-mix that my mother prepares for me.
Dos: Make sure you drink a lot of liquids. Exercising regularly will also help your hair and body. A monthly trim is essential for getting rid of split ends.
Don’ts: Don’t colour and blow-dry your hair too much.

    Neha Dhupia
My home remedy is a great mix of curd, olive or mustard oil and two eggs, if you are willing to put up with the dirty smell. It makes your hair look great.
Dos: I just think it’s a healthy diet that makes all the difference.
Don’ts: The biggest don’t is hair rebonding.

    Shilpa Shetty
There is a weird logic with our thinking that oil serves as a fertiliser for the hair but I don’t think so. If I take an oil massage it’s because I want to relax.
Do’s: I do not stick to a particular shampoo as it’s important to give your hair a continuity jerk so I use a different shampoo and conditioner every four months.
Don’ts: Don’t over-use the curling irons or chemical products.

    Hairstylist To The Stars
Jawed Habib, who has worked on Fashion and Billoo and also with leading B’wood stars shares his hair care tips.

    · I think Shahid should opt for short to medium length in layering as he is not very tall and the medium length will add bounce and height.

    ·
Abhishek should stick to this short cut but must add some colour as his complexion is darker.

    · Hrithik is carrying the look that suits him best so no suggestions.

    · Bipasha needs a lighter colour on her to complement her dusky skin tone.

    ·
Priyanka should carry some colour with that cut.

    Fashion Care for Your Nails

It is your face that everyone looks at first and then it is your nails that tell more about yourself. So you definitely need to take better care of your nails. Groom them weekly, moisturize them daily, protect them from the sun, and take proper care of your cuticles. By doing these you can expect the best nail care. The following are some tips on how to deal effectively with various nail care problems.

    Brittle nails

These are generally caused by sun exposure, taking a poor diet or using commercial nail hardeners for a long time. Avoid using hardeners because they contain formaldehyde, a chemical that has a drying effect on your nails. Instead use a waterproof coating. It seals moisture in your nail and pushes away water and dirt. A waxy lip balm is the best and effective option for softening your nails.

    Hangnails

Hangnails are normally caused by picking and biting nails, exposure to chemicals and detergents or nail neglect. Remove these hangnails using a sharp cuticle nipper. Don't use a dull and cheap cuticle nipper because it may create more damage. Using massage cuticle oil, lotion or cream once in a day can help prevent hangnails completely. If your cuticles are creating more pain, applying moisturizer twice everyday helps you a lot in dealing with the pain.

    Ridges

Ridges usually are caused due to genetic reasons. Though you cannot avoid or cure the problem, you can smooth the ridged surface using a buffer and buffing cream. However, if the ridges are recent, then it may be a sign of anemia. Then you have to consult your doctor. These may be caused by applying much pressure and pushing during manicure. You should be gentle when grooming your nails, so that they grow back.
    White spots

These are normally caused by: a blow to your nail, application of too much pressure on your nail matrix during manicure or generally. Let the white spots grow out. Be gentle when manicuring the nails because prodding beneath the cuticles may cause these spots.

    Yellow nails

It is normally caused by not using base coat underneath the polish. It may also be a more serious nail fungus. The best treatment to deal with this problem is lightening the discolored nails using a whitening scrub having a mild abrasive. You can also use a remover that contains a lemon juice-like ingredient. This ingredient can bleach out the yellow.
    Nail biting

There is no surefire way for stopping the nail biting habit. But getting a professional manicure every week can help a lot. You are less likely to bite your nails if they are even and polished. Also, if you feel better about your hands you won't feel like covering up your nails.

    Facial Hair Removal Tips

Facial hair can be very embarrassing, in case of women. If you are having unwanted facial hair, you may also be wondering on the best way to deal with it. Generally people go in for simplest methods like shaving and tweezing.

All lot of women use waxing treatment, this is done by applying hot or cold wax to the hairy spots and then using a tiny cloth pad the hair is pulled out in a jerk. This hurts a bit, and also the hair grows back. You have to get this done every four weeks or so, and is also expensive. Hair-removing chemicals, commonly known as depilatories, are available in various forms like cream, lotion, spray and gel. But these chemicals may cause irritation and it's better to keep away from them.

Here we are some effective treatments that help you in eliminating unwanted facial hair with minimal side effects.

    Vaniqua

This is a prescription skin cream that can reduce the rate of hair growth. But it can be applied only around your mouth and chin. Like depilatories, it can irritate your skin. This hair-removal method can cause ingrown hairs that can be unsightly, and harmless.

    Electrolysis

It is a more expensive and often extensive treatment. In this method, a tiny metal probe will be put into each hair follicle. Then the hair base will be destroyed by delivering an electric current. This treatment has to be repeated many times. But the hair loss will be permanent. It can be painful and may also cause scarring. There are also electronic tweezers available in the market. But they can not be effective and cannot permanently remove hair.

    Lazer Treatment

It is also an expensive and often extensive treatment. It is a surgical technique. This should be done by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. You can get this treatment done in a salon with the help of a supervising physician. This process generally requires multiple treatments and hair loss also may not be permanent. You can expect only hair reduction and not complete hair elimination. You may have to make return visits to the salon. So plan your budget well before going for laser treatment. It works best for light-skinned and dark hair. But it is not effective for removing blond or gray hair.
    Things to Keep in Mind

Some women get unwanted facial hair on the face, usually on the upper lip and chin, for many reasons like hormonal changes during menopause, genetics and side effects of some medications. Simple and non-surgical methods like tweezing, waxing and depilatories are the simple and best choices. If you can not notice enough difference, consult a dermatologist or a qualified physician for getting electrolysis or laser treatment.

avoid white flour and its products as far as possible. Take only unprocessed foods, including fruit, vegetables, whole grains and limited amounts of lean animal protein. This also adds fiber in your diet which makes you feel fuller. Eating salads is a healthy option, but don’t replace your meals only with salads, and be careful with salad dressings, mayonnaise, and other items that are high in fat content. Avoid oily and fried foods. Include good proteins in the form of pulses, sprouts, milk, eggs, fish, and lean meats or deskinned chicken. Drink sufficient water daily to keep yourself well hydrated. Brisk walk for 40-45 minutes or stretching exercises for the lower body will help. Exercise makes it possible to create a calorie deficit and lose weight without starving your body.

Q: If you are 14-year-old girl. Your height is 5.2 inches and weight 53kg?

A: You possess an excellent body weight. Your ideal body weight should be between 52-54 kg. It is your growing age and at this stage I can not recommend you to lose weight. If you feel you have excess fat on your thighs and hips then you can manage it by doing exercise on regular basis and a balanced diet. Here is an exercise for you.
Squats are effective and easy to do. They work on hips, thighs, and calves. To perform a squat, start at a standing position and bend your body at the waist and knees until you are almost sitting on your ankles, then lift yourself back into a standing position. For more effective squats, hold weights at your shoulders while performing your repetitions. The more weight that you use, the more muscle you will gain; however, to focus on muscle toning, use less weight so that you are able to perform more repetitions.
Walk at an average pace, and you will burn four calories per minute.

Q: If you are 27-year-old, unmarried girl. Your height is 5’2 inches and weight 57kg.

A: Your ideal body weight should be about 50-52 kg. You are not suggested to lose weight because you are not overweight. But you can maintain your figure by doing exercises and adopting good eating habits.
Jogging, stair climbing, cycling, brisk walking and treadmill exercises, are the best. These exercises provide a sustained effect on your body and can be maintained for a certain period of time.
As far as the diet is concerned, it should be balanced and your diet menu should be the following:
Breakfast: one cup strawberries, half cup low fat cheese with one tablespoon of sunflower seeds and one slice of whole grain toast.
Lunch: Salad made up of dark green lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes, two ounce beef with whole grain roll.
Dinner: Half bowl whole wheat spaghetti with two ounces chicken, cooked green vegetables such as asparagus, spinach or broccoli.
Drink at least six to eight glasses of water per day. Choose whole grain breads and cereals for main meals.

Q: If you are 26-year-old working girl. Your weight is 85kg at height 5’2 inches.

A: Your body weight should not be more than 54kg. The following easy weight loss tips will help you in losing weight in a healthy way.
Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables. They fill up your stomach fast and are also low in calories and help in keeping your calorie count low.
Do not skip meals. Eating small frequent meals helps in balancing your calorie intake throughout the day. Instead of eating 3 big meals, try to eat 5 to 6 smaller meals.
Go for wholesome fresh foods and avoid processed foods.
Remove carbohydrates from your diet. Start your morning with a bowl of cereal. For added flavour and health benefits, chop up a banana or strawberry and add into your cereal. Drink water rather than cold drinks. Peel the fat off meat before cooking.
Also try adding weight-bearing exercises at least 4 times a week. This will help burn unwanted calories.
An exercise that works the hips and thighs is called a wall slide. To perform a wall slide, stand up straight with your back against a flat wall. Slide your back down the wall as you walk your feet outward until you are bent to your desired levels at your waist and knees. To focus on muscle building, bend yourself into a sitting position. To focus on muscle toning, bend only about halfway to a sitting position.
    Here is your diet plan:
Breakfast: One cup of skimmed milk, a bowl of oatmeal, an apple.
Lunch: One slice of whole wheat bread, 1 piece of chicken breast, 1 tomato and salad.
Dinner: White rice, mix vegetables, salad.

Q: If you are 38 years old. Your height is 5ft and weight 60kg. You want to become smart. You have a large belly and face as well as excess fat around my hips?

A: The best way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories and increase your physical activity. Plan to lose weight gradually. A weight loss of one to two pounds a week is usually safe.
You need to change your lifestyle. This requires cutting back on the number of calories and adopting an active lifestyle. Change your eating habits. Avoid foods high in calories, such as cookies, cakes and other sweets; fried foods; oils, and spreads. Keep your intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol as low as possible. Choose foods naturally high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes (such as beans and lentils), and whole grains.Replace two slices of white toast with 1/2 a cup of oatmeal or whole grain cereal.
Here is your diet and physical activity plan:
Break fast: One cup of skimmed milk, a banana, sandwich made with 2 small slices of whole meal bread.
Lunch: Whole meal roll and mixed vegetables salad with onions.
Dinner: Roast chicken breast (without skin), broccoli, steamed or boiled.
For toning your body add the following exercise in you physical activities on a daily basis.
Lie on your back and lift your legs and arms off the floor, so that your knees are bent just above your hips and your arms are directly over your shoulders, palms facing forwards. Keeping as still as possible, pull your abdominals back into your spine. Hold this position for two sets of eight counts. Then lower your right foot to the floor and tap with your heel four times, without letting the lower back arch. Still contracting your abdominals, raise the right foot back up, then lower your left to tap your heel on the floor. Build up to six to eight repetitions for the whole exercise.
